Variables and indicators in research: how to operationalize concepts

Operationalization combines the language of theory with observable data. Concepts such as satisfaction, engagement or service quality are not directly measurable.

Variables and indicators in research: how to operationalize concepts

Key information

  • ✓Separate the definition of a concept from the way it is measured.
  • ✓One complex variable usually requires several indicators.
  • ✓Don't add questions you don't use in your analysis.
  • ✓Check the operational tables for compatibility with the hypotheses.

From concept to variable

First, accept a literature-based definition, then determine what characteristics of the concept will change in the study group, which protects you from a situation where the survey measures a convenient but different problem than the one described in the theoretical part.

Measurements and indicators

A complex concept can be divided into dimensions, such as cognitive, emotional, and behavioral. For each dimension, observable indicators are selected. The indicator must be clear enough to be assigned a question, a code category, or specific information from a document.

The Commission shall adopt delegated acts in accordance with Article 21 of this Regulation.

A practical table may contain columns: a specific problem, a hypothesis, a variable, a definition, a dimension, an indicator, a tool question and an analysis method.

Quality control of the measurement

Before the pilot study, check the comprehensibility of the formulations, the completeness of the response variants and the compatibility of the scales.

Summary

A good operationalization creates a readable chain from theory to conclusion. Each indicator should have a justification, an answer to the question or data source, and a planned method of analysis.

Frequently asked questions

Can one survey question measure a variable?

In the case of simple facts, often, complex constructs, like attitude or satisfaction, usually require several consistent indicators.
