JSA similarity coefficient - how to read the report?

The results of the Uniform Anti-Plagiarism System can cause anxiety, especially when a student sees the percentage without context. However, the report is not an automatic verdict. It indicates similarities that need to be interpreted: check their source, length, arrangement and the way quotations are marked. The final assessment requires an analysis of the content and rules applicable at a specific university.

JSA similarity coefficient - how to read the report?

Key information

  • The similarity coefficient indicates the similarity of the text, but does not alone determine plagiarism.
  • Thresholds and procedures should be checked in the current regulations of your own university or department.
  • The most important thing is to analyze specific fragments, sources and way of quoting.
  • You should not mechanically replace words just to lower your score.

What does the Uniform Anti-plagiarism System check?

JSA compares the text of the work with resources indicated in the system and detects similar strings of characters. The report helps the promoter find places that require assessment. He does not know the author's intentions and cannot independently decide whether a given similarity is a correct quote, a common phrase or an unauthorized borrowing.

Therefore, the quantitative result is the beginning of the audit, not its end. Two works with a similar percentage may be assessed differently: in one case they focus on correctly described quotations, in the other they cover long fragments without reference to the source.

Why isn't there one safe percentage?

Universities and departments adopt their own procedures for dealing with the report. They may define the values that trigger additional control, the method of re-examination and documenting the promoter's decisions. Current rules should be found in the diploma regulations or anti-plagiarism procedure of the relevant unit.

The specificity of the direction is also important. The legal work contains the names of the acts and the wording of the provisions, and the technical work may use fixed terminology. This does not exempt you from correctly labeling sources, but it shows why mechanical comparisons of mere percentages can be misleading.

How to analyze selected fragments?

First, you need to check the longest similarities and determine what source they come from. Then it is worth assessing whether the fragment is a quote, a paraphrase, an element of the bibliography, a proper name or a standard description of a method. Each category requires a different action.

The quote checks the quotation marks, footnote and page number. When paraphrasing, you need to assess whether the author actually presented the content in his own words and indicated the source, and not just changed a few words. In the bibliography and forms, attention is paid primarily to the correctness of notation and analysis settings.

Quotation, paraphrase and common knowledge

A literal quote should be clearly marked in accordance with the adopted style. A paraphrase does not require quotation marks, but it still requires attribution if it presents someone else's ideas, data, or conclusions. The mere change of sentence order does not make the text an independent study.

Common knowledge does not always require a footnote, but the limit depends on the field and context. Detailed values, definitions, classifications and test results should be sourced. In case of doubt, it is safer to verify the record with the supervisor or according to the university guidelines.

What not to do after seeing a high score?

You should not accidentally replace words with synonyms or break up valid terms just to change the percentage. Such an operation may deteriorate the language, distort the meaning and do not solve the problem of the lack of a source. The goal is the accuracy of the text, not to deceive the comparison mechanism.

It is also risky to upload all your unpublished work to random websites. Before transferring a document to an external entity, you must check the rules of confidentiality, file processing and deletion. The official report and the promoter's comments remain the basis for further actions.

How to prepare for an interview with the promoter?

It is worth making a short list of problematic places: page number, type of similarity, indicated source and proposed method of improvement. Such a table facilitates a substantive conversation and shows that the author is analyzing the report, instead of focusing only on the percentage.

If changes are necessary, work from a copy of the file and retain the version submitted for testing. After corrections, you need to check the footnotes, bibliography and consistency of terms again. The re-examination is decided by the university's procedure, so it is not worth setting it up without consultation.

Summary

The JSA report should be read from the marked passages to their sources, not from one number to a hasty conclusion. A correctly described quotation, title of a legal act and unmarked borrowing may increase similarity, but require a different assessment. The most important thing is to determine whether the author clearly separated his own argument from the content from the sources and whether he applied the principles of his university.

Frequently asked questions

How much percentage in JSA is allowed?

There is no one universal threshold applicable to all universities and all jobs. Detailed procedures are specified in the regulations of the units, and the result requires the supervisor's assessment.

Does a high ratio mean plagiarism?

Not automatically. It may result from, among other things, quotations, names of legal acts, terminology or similarities requiring explanation. You need to analyze the marked places.

Is it possible to check the work at JSA yourself?

The official examination takes place in accordance with the university's procedure. External services should not be considered a guarantee of an identical result or a substitute for an official report.
