Key information
- ✓Check the rules of your major; someone else's limit does not apply at your university.
- ✓Determine whether the limit includes the title page, bibliography, illustrations and appendices.
- ✓The length of chapters should result from the purpose and material, not from the need to increase the number.
Is there a mandatory number of pages?
There is no single volume applicable at all Polish universities. For example, the guidelines of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy of Adam Mickiewicz University provide for approximately 30-60 pages, while other units indicate a minimum of 40 pages or a range of 40-60. These are examples of discrepancies, not a nationwide norm.
Check the document on the faculty website or in the university system. Please note the date of the guidelines, level of study and field of study. If the writing is unclear, ask your supervisor for confirmation before starting to write the chapters.
What exactly counts as a page count?
The title page, table of contents, bibliography and appendices may be counted differently from the main text. Tables and photos also change the size of the file without increasing the amount of argumentation. Therefore, the page counter in Word alone is not sufficient to check compliance with the requirements.
If your university uses the concept of a standard page, check the required character conversion with spaces. The number of characters for the appropriate text fragment can be read in the document statistics.
How to plan the volume of a bachelor's thesis?
Write down the purpose of the work and questions, and then assign chapters to them. The introduction should announce the problem and method; the theoretical part explains the concepts needed in the analysis; the analytical or design part show the material and how to reach conclusions.
Leave room for corrections after the supervisor's comments. If one chapter grows at the expense of all the others, check for subplots. If the whole thing is too short, look for missing reasoning, data, or interpretation instead of stretching the sentences.
How can you adapt the structure to your work?
List the elements required by your department and mark those relevant to your programme and type of assignment. Compare them with your aim and the material you actually have. Only then decide the order of chapters, headings or document sections.
Give each part of the outline one job: define a concept, describe the method, present a finding or answer a research question. If two parts do exactly the same job, combine them or make their scope clearly different.
What should you check in sources and guidelines?
Use the current instructions from your own department, not a random template from another university. Check required sections, heading levels, table and figure numbering, and citation rules. An older template may contain outdated fields or a different layout.
For each planned subsection, note where its material will come from: publications, documents, data or your own analysis. If a key part has no suitable sources, narrow the topic or change the structure before writing many pages.
How can you avoid last-minute revisions?
Once you have a draft introduction, read the headings alone. Do they lead from the problem to an answer? Then compare the conclusion with the aim in the introduction and remove promises the work does not fulfil.
Update the automatic contents page, captions, cross-references and numbering. Open the exported PDF because a table or page break may move outside the editor. Keep an editable copy before the final export.
A practical check before sending the file
Make a copy and read the document in the reader's order: title page, contents, introduction, main chapters, conclusion, references and appendices. Mark headings that promise something different from the paragraph below them. This catches gaps more effectively than correcting isolated sentences in random order.
Check automatic elements in Word too: heading styles, table and figure captions, cross-references and page numbers. If your department provides a template, compare both the DOCX and final PDF with it. The exported file may look different from the editing view.
Summary
The number of pages is a formal criterion, not an objective in itself. First, check the current department policies and agree on the scope with your supervisor. Then divide the space between the parts that are necessary to answer the thesis question.
Frequently asked questions
Are 30 pages enough for a bachelor's thesis?
In some fields yes, in others there is a higher minimum. They are determined by the current guidelines of the unit conducting the studies and arrangements with the supervisor.
Does the bibliography count towards the volume?
It depends on department policy. Some include the entire document, others only the main text without bibliography and annexes. You need to check the definition of volume in the guidelines.
What to do if the job is too short?
Check whether an overview of sources, a description of the method, an analysis of the material, or a discussion of the results is missing. Do not add paragraphs that do not help answer your research question.
